Resolution # A039: Affirm the Work of the Episcopal Church at the United Nations
RESOLUTION TEXT
- Resolved, the House of _______ concurring, That the 79th General Convention and the Domestic and Foreign Missionary Society of the Episcopal Church rejoice together in being granted Economic and Social Council consultative status at the United Nations; and be it further
- Resolved, That this Church encourages all Episcopalians to educate themselves about the work of the United Nations and the many ways in which our collective call as Christians to “seek and serve Christ in all persons” links with the work undertaken at the United Nations, and to partner with the United Nations and its agencies to achieve these goals; and be it further
- Resolved, That the 79th General Convention encourages all Episcopalians to avail themselves of the resources and opportunities presented by this status, in particular partnering with the Global Partnerships team and the Church’s official representatives to the United Nations.
Episcopalians have participated in various ways at the United Nations. Episcopalians are UN staff, represent various organizations and member states. Episcopalians also engage with the UN in our local churches, dioceses and communities. Episcopalians have partnered with the United Nations since its inception in 1945. We learn about issues being discussed and contribute our expertise.
Last year, the United Nations commemorated its 75th anniversary of the entry into the United Nations Charter. That date is the official founding of the United Nations known as “United Nation Day”, October 24, 2020.
I remember the prayer from our Presiding Bishop to mark the occasion. I am hopeful that we open our buildings prayerfully thinking about each other and with this prayer in mind. The “Prayer for Peace Among the Nations” as a prayer of solidarity while the world continues to work toward peace, justice, human rights and the full development and dignity of all peoples living in harmony with each other, our planet and its creatures.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, guide the nations of the world into the way of justice and truth, and establish among them that peace which is the fruit of righteousness, that they may become the kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen
