Isn’t he adorable!!
I’ve noticed that when someone posts a picture of a cute animal on social media everyone notices – so I thought that if I found a cute puppy photo, more people would notice our new blog! As it turns out, my puppy photo is also representative of the resolution we’re sharing this week.
Authorize Rites and Prayers for Care of Beloved Animals (A054)
I bet you didn’t know that our Church has an authorized service and prayers honoring our furry friends. General Convention passed this resolution just last summer. Here’s one example of a prayer at the adoption of a new pet:
God, whose nature and whose name is Love: We thank you for this new relationship between N. [and N.] and this animal A. Let their home be filled with kindness and care; let them be the delight of one another’s hearts; and watch over and keep them from this day forward in safety and peace; for your Name’s sake. Amen.
The resolution also contains a service for the loss of a beloved pet, as well as other appropriate prayers. Rather than print the whole text here, just let us know if you’d like a copy and we’ll be sure to get it to you! Isn’t it great that The Episcopal Church recognizes the wonderful bond between people and their pets and cares enough to bring this resolution to convention for us! I know my pups and I are very appreciative.
– Judith Schellhammer, Chair of the Resolution Review Committee, Diocesan Council
Actually I did know about this resolution, Judith, and I’ve already used some of the prayers from it! They are well written, beautiful, and very meaningful. Thanks for encouraging others to check them out.
